2009-2010 GAMES & UPDATES
Smithers Steelheads Vs. Terrace Riverkings November 7th 2009
The Flu, injuries, and prior commitments had the Steelheads travelling to Terrace with a shortened bench. However, it was the Steelheads who would come out on top with just 12 skaters etching out the win.
The first period saw constant pressure by the Heads, outshooting the Kings 24-6. Terrace Goaltender, Craig Walsh, did a great job of keeping his team in the game with some nice saves. By the end of 20, the Steelheads had only managed to get 2 past the goalie, both of which were scored on the power play. The first, coming from Russ Blanchard assisted by Brendan Hutchinson and the second goal, being scored by Dan Dykens also assisted by “Hutch”.
Some un-disciplined play on the part of Colby Johnson and a bit of a “questionable” call against Toby Mitchell resulted in the two goal deficit heading into the second. The two goals bring the Steelheads power play total to 16, maintaining the league lead by 6 goals over our nearest competitor.
The second period the Kings came out flying and out-shot the Steelheads 16-11. Steelheads young goaltender Tyler Perreault, is changing the minds of many a CIHL fan about the Steelheads goaltending ability, great job. The Kings had just under 2 mins of a 5 on 3 and still couldn’t put one past Perreault and the penalty killing of Young, Barns, Hutch, Devries.
After some hard work and smart play on the part of the Riverkings, they were finally able to get one back before leaving the second period. The goal was scored by Steve Cullis, assisted by Derek Jurista and Collin Findlay. Penalties on the game after 40 were 3 for Terrace, 2 for Smithers. Terrace played the entire second period penalty free which has to be a team first for the Riverkings! Hats off boys!
The Steelheads scored 4 goals in the third to bring the final tally to 6 Steelheads 1 Riverkings. Goals scored are as follows; (3) Devon Hayhurst, assisted by Ryan Devries and Dan Dykens. (4) Matt Arnold, assisted by Ryan Devries. (5) Randle Groot, assisted by Stu Barns and Dan Dykens. (6) Brendan Hutchinson assisted by Dennis Olson.
Two skirmishes throughout the game. The first, Kyle Leblond of the RiverKings Vs. Matt Arnold of the Steelheads; Leblond took the extra penalty and ended up flat on his back. The second, Brad Holvbowski of the Kings cross checked Dennis Olson in front of the Kings Goalie to get things going. Dennis punched him once, Brads legs buckled and he received two or three more before he hit the ice. Brad walked away not sure what had just happened. Penalty total for the game was 8 for the Kings and 6 for the Heads.
Scrappy play by Terrace and a “never say die” attitude from Smithers provided a fairly entertaining match for a decent sized crowd in the Terrace arena.
